Why can't we send out Thief for more than 1 day at a time and then have to pay .50 XRP daily?

Because every day is a seperate theiving pool. The theft pool is based off Miners that finished their contract that specific day. Brings chance and an extra variable to your decision making for once raiding with your army class begins. You will have two different actions at that point. There will also be raids that last a lot longer than a one day duration. Some will be as long as 30 days.
